Interweaving Awareness of Being in the iRest Procotol
Suggestions from the Class

Updated May 19, 2009

Focus of Attention

  • Contrast background and foreground, noticing what does not change.
  • The point between inhale and exhale; establish this early on, and ask participants to pause there and notice the stillness.
  • Feel the silent reverberation at the end of an exhale.
  • Breathe into the space around the body.
  • Feel the space around the body. Feel space touching back.
  • Global body feeling.
  • Feel the vibration within the body.

Suggested Wording

  • "Spacious"
  • "Step back"
  • Identify that aspect of the self that never changes; then choose a word meaningful to the participant(s), e.g.
    • "Witness"
    • "Awareness"
    • "Stillness"
  • Richard Miller's suggested conclusion: Meet, greet and respond from that place of stillness

Sound

  • Listen to crystal bowls.
  • Listen to chimes die away to silence.
  • Transition from speech to silence: shed words, speak slowly, descending in tone and loudness toward a pause of silence, e.g.
    • "Pure awareness is utterly still, silent ... awareness ... still ... ... silent ... ... ... "
